At Seattle Casual Games Conference this Week

Just wanted to let you know I'm at the Seattle Casual Games Conference all this week… and sadly, without net connectivity! <sigh> So I'm unlikely to be writing much up as the iPhone keyboard just isn't up to a long blog post. Wink

In all seriousness, the conference should be quite interesting. We've had some great feedback from the Microsoft presentations Monday (especially around XNA and Arcade Games), and I'm looking forward to hearing the presentations today.

When will the general public see any thing that has been produced by the XNA community? I keep hearing about it and seeing glimpses of games here and there, but hasn’t a roadmap been made by MS to get these titles out on Xbox LIVE? Nothing was mentioned about it at E3.  Any announcements being made at this conference in Seattle by MS officially this week?

I’d like to play some of these titles.

You know about Peter? Sorry to see him go. Do we take this to mean that he has loss faith in XBox’s prospects?  When are we going to hear from Don Mattrick?

I’d like to hear your thoughts about the Moore/Mattrick news as well.  I’ll certainly miss Peter Moore, I always appreciated his candor.   Out of all the console spokespeople, Moore is the guy I’d want to have a beer with.

On the bright side..Don looks pretty clean cut and you know what that means.  Plenty of virgin skin to tattoo! :)

Seriously, I think Don needs to get alot of exposure.  There are alot of things that I have questions about.  Is he currently a gamer?  Does he have children who are into games?  How good is his reputation & relationship with third party game studios?   What is his commitment to XBox as a entertainment platform and not just games?

Any feedback in those MS presentations from the XBLA callout to the community of a few months back? There was a general call for feedback and many provided some, but it’s been pretty quiet since then…

Sounds good, keeping my eye on it.

I don’t have anything new or exciting to share about Peter leaving – I was just as surprised to hear it today as you. Frankly, I don’t think there’s any hidden story here… Peter’s always been a Bay Area guy, and I could totally see the draw of family (plus a decent raise) being enough to make the move make sense for him.

It’s important to remember this industry is quite small. People move about all the time – I’m reminded of this every time I go to a show and see people I’ve known for 20 years in yet another role at another company. This falls right in line with that.

For casual gaming…I really think you guys need a more intuitive-fun controller.  That controller included with SceneIT is a good step but not enough.  Have you guys been talking to attendies about what they might want in a casual gaming controller?

  • Xwar

Yes, by all means don’t bother with interesting concepts, highly-refined gameplay or even a tidbit of originality here and there. Make a new controller and any sort of decade-old pap can be recycled without anyone being the wiser!

Of course if Microsoft does anything even remotely similar to the Wii’s gimmick controller they’ll be slammed – hard – for copying. Well, you can’t win *any* of them if you’re Microsoft, can you?

    /still can’t wait for Marathon 2 & WC Arena…

Personally I can’t see any problem with companies reaching out for the casual market.

The "hardcore" seem to take offence at this – sw we’ve seen with the Wii fitness pad and MS "buzzer".

Settle down – just because Nintendo want to expand the market – doesn’t mean they’ve cancelled Mario Galaxy. Just because Buzz came out for PS2 it didn’t mean Shadow Of The Colossus was recalled.

In Nintendo’s case – what were they supposed to do? Add more games to the "we know you’re still waiting for MP3, SMG and SSBB – but how about you wait for these too"? That would’ve backfired for me personally as an early Wii adopter still loooking for the "essential" launch period titles I was expecting 7 months ago?

Also – re: Peter Moore. If he stands to make 3.3 million in 2 years, and gets to move his family back to their familiar terrritory – I couldn’t see may people refusing that offer. I’ll miss the scouser personally. Surely LFC will win the title and end up on the next FIFA box. Unless of course Mr Moore was an Evertonian – in which case – I’m glad he’s gone (just kidding)
