End of an era

Just saw that Computer Gaming World/Games for Windows Magazine has finally ended their nearly 30-year long run. They’ll be moving to the web, but it’s startling for me to realize that this magazine (that I basically grew up with) is now a thing of the past. Changing times, indeed.

Magazines with "news" are pretty much dead. They simply can’t compete with the web, so moving to web-only is just about inevitable.

Don’t know if it’s a subscription service or not, but at least they don’t seem to be intent on making a downloadable magazine (like Photoshop User Magazine for international subscribers being a crap Zinio file only). Those things tend to annoy rather than elate.

There are still dead tree videogame magazines?

    Sheesh.

Wondering if the ‘Games for Windows’ licensed direction was strong enough for a magazine. Maybe if Games for Windows LIVE was as developed as Xbox LIVE with downloadable games, movies, etc. it would’ve been better recognized as a platform and community within the PC gaming realm. (Not assigning blame to the GFWL team. Just stating the fact that the vision hasn’t become reality yet.)
