Have iPad, Need Cat!

Picked up an iPad last week, and though the purposeful omissions are annoying, it’s a great device – think it’s probably killed the idea of netbooks for once and for all (though there’s plenty of space for low-priced, connected laptops with keyboards for content creation). Anyway, will write some thoughts on the iPad later, but I had to share this video. Apple may need to start handing out kittens with the purchase of every iPad… genius!

Personally I think netbooks will evolve because of the iPad and other tablet PCs. They’ll get touchscreens and, if reliable and affordable, they’ll be 180° turn-able so they turn into a tablet. It’s not new tech by a long shot, but with the cheaper innards and rise in demand for good touchscreens, I can’t imagine that won’t happen.

Another very good side-effect of the iPad hype: if tablets take off as predicted, netbooks will drop in price quite a bit due to a lack of demand, making them far more interesting for people like myself who currently think they’re too expensive for what they offer.

“think it’s probably killed the idea of netbooks for once and for all (though there’s plenty of space for low-priced, connected laptops with keyboards for content creation).”

I read this as “it’s killed the idea of netbooks, but there is still plenty of space for netbooks”. Huh? I have a netbook because it is a compact and inexpensive version of a laptop. It’s not an ipad and I don’t want it to be an ipad.

See, now I want one. I already have a cat, too, so I’m halfway there.

I thought the ipad would become a big hit with the senior generation. They can surf the web, email, look at pictures and videos (of grandkids, presumably), and they can read books on it.

Personally, I want one for traveling with. Gotta love that power supply.

@Steve – the difference is between content creation and consumption. Right now a big market for netbooks is folks who want to have a quick, accessible web-surfing, Facebook checking machine on their coffee table or bedside table. They might use it for some content creation, but we see that most people seem to gravitate to larger machines for that. The iPad has really nailed the content consumption model – I don’t think replaces the need for a machine with robust data entry/manipulation tools (like keyboard/mouse), but I do think that for those people who want something to just view/read the web, or interact at a high-level (quick emails, status updates, that sort of thing), it’s really set a new bar.

As someone who is using a netbook to read this article I’d have to say I disagree with your diagnosis. ;)

With a decent keyboard and enough RAM I can use it for pretty much any business function like documents or spreadsheets. More importantly, when pushed it can even run visual studio.

I couldn’t conceivably do any of that on a touch screen, no matter how large.

I just picked up an ipad over a netbook, dropped my itouch and broke the screen so i figured i would upgrade. I am using it now and typing on it for the first time and i am enjoying it a lot. Great product and i am glad i decided this route. My touch seems so tiny!
