Jeff Minter Bringing Tempest To Xbox Live Arcade!

Was pretty excited to see this post on Evil Avatar pointing to Jeff Minter’s blog discussing the topic. For those of you who don’t know, Jeff created Tempest for the Atari Jaguar – probably the sole reason to own the system (and the reason I still have mine packed away in the basement). The Jaguar’s version was well known for psychedelic effects and a great techno soundtrack – from the looks of things, the Xbox Live arcade version appears to be (at least visually) in the same vein.

Random trivia: Jeff’s work on the Jaguar version of Tempest led us to him when we were looking for developers to help build the music visualizers in the Xbox 360. He did an awesome job of those, and I’m super-excited to see how “Tempest 360″ (my made-up name) ends up!

Couple of pictures from his blog are below – don’t worry about the blurriness, Jeff’s psycheldelic games are always fast-moving and impossible to photograph. Just imagine taking a shot of Geometry Wars past 1,000,000 points and you’ll understand what I mean.

Sweet, looks like Geometry Wars.  Thanks for the update, I love hearing about new arcade games.

Delighted to hear this. Outstanding game!

    Isn’t that space giraffe?

Man, Tempest 2000 on the Sega Saturn was also a dope, dope, game.

I am glad to see this, but I would not also mind a 400 MP point Tempest 2k game on XBL either…

It is kind of of hard to see the "space giraffe" in the photos, but the game looks really similiar.

I’ve never heard of him or his games (I’m young, I guess), but the pictures look great!  I would love to see another Geometry Wars like game!

Anyone that drinks Stella must be a great game maker. Good taste will out.

I remember Tempest 2000 on the Jaguar. Its was a sick game. Glad to hear that its coming to the Xbox360. I would have to agree with SiderArmS, that I wouldn’t mind a 400 MS points version, but if it was 800 I would still get it. iTs a quality game thats a great challange.

I would rather pay 800 for Tempest 2000, than all the BS pice plan for Luminous Live. There is no way I am going to get that game once it comes out. I actually have lost all appeal for the game just cause of the stupid crap that they are pulling with the pricing.

You may know of some of his other work on Xbox 360 as its built into every console… He designed the interactive multiuser visulations that are oh so fun and addictive.
