Mark DeLoura, Manager of Developer Relations leaves Sony

Title pretty much says it all, but Mark DeLoura, Manager of Developer Relations at Sony is leaving after five years at the job. I’ve met Mark many times and shared some good-natured jibes and drinks with him, and I have to say this is a huge loss for Sony. Mark was one of the best in developer relations, very well respected in the industry, and was instrumental in trying to get Sony Corporate to take developer support seriously. (Although I like to think Mark was following the example our Game Technology Group sets.) ;)


I do have to wonder how much of Sony’s flailing was a part of this decision, but I guess we’ll never really know since Mark is too much of a professional to kiss and tell. My guess is that it had to be at least part of the decision, though.


Still, best of wishes on your new role Mark!

    Why would he leave now? Prior to the PS3′s launch, it would almost seem certain that his job would continue its importance.

    Could dev issues and decreasing third-party support have possibly eroded his position?

    Also, Sony lost Molly Smith. For anyone in the press, she WAS Sony. I knew her back when she was with Ocean- and we had a good relationship. I wonder what changes have occurred within Sony to cause it to lose yet another alumni?

    What does someone’s head of developer relations do?  Entice 3rd parties to make games for your console?

    The head of developer relations manages a team of technical folks who go out to developers and help them make games on their hardware (in Mark’s case, the Playstation 2, Playstation 3, and PSP). So basically he was the guy helping make sure Playstation 3 game developers were getting what they needed to make and ship their games.

    Hhahahaha thanks Arokh – I don’t think Sony would take kindly to me switching sides like that.  The non-compete agreement theoretically is not valid in California, but I’d rather not press my luck.  Thanks for the suggestion though! :)
