Nielsen: Smartphones to Overtake Feature Phones by 2011

Just wanted to point you to an interesting blog post from Nielsen about future Smartphone market growth in the US. To quote:

The share of smartphones as a proportion of overall device sales has increased to 29% for phone purchasers in the last six months and 45% of respondents to a Nielsen survey indicated that their next device will be a smartphone. If we combine these intentional data points with falling prices and increasing capabilities of these devices along with a explosion of applications for devices, we are seeing the beginning of a groundswell. This increase will be so rapid, that by the end of 2011, Nielsen expects more smartphones in the U.S. market than feature phones.

What’s astounding to me is the projection of half of all US phones being Smartphones in 2011 – just over a year away. This is one of the reasons I’m so excited about our bringing Xbox LIVE to Windows Phone. As these devices become more and more prevalent, the likelihood of your friends being connected (and available to play) goes up dramatically. Sure, they won’t all be Windows Phones – but we’ll keep chipping away at the pie over time. Smile
