Penny Arcade to do Episodic Video Game w/Hothead Games

Was gearing up to head to PAX and just saw this on Evil Avatar:

Penny Arcade and Hothead Games Join Forces to Create Video Games Based on the Penny Arcade Characters and Universe

Bellevue, Washington (August 25, 2006) — The creators of online ultracomic Penny Arcade have joined forces with Hothead Games, an independent and experienced video game developer, to collaboratively create video games based on the Penny Arcade comic.

The first game, entitled Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, will be a comic adventure game initially available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux, followed by a version for next-generation consoles. The game will be available by digital download, delivered in episodic format with new installments of the adventure coming out several times a year.

Good chance this was the big news to be announced at the show. Bummer it was released early, but doesn’t take away from the fact that it could be a great deal of fun. Crossing my fingers and wishing everyone involved the best of luck!

Awesome news, if anyone is in a position to make a game out a comic, it’s Gabe and Tycho. By the way Ozy, how’s Lego Star Wars II?

Sweet, can’t wait to head to PAX today.  It’s going to be awesome!

Considering Tycho’s previously stated positions on episodic content (he loves it) this doesn’t seem too surprising! I bet that the digital download service they’re going to use is Steam.

Episode content seems dissappoint, but we’ll see.

And once it gets going, there will be Fruit F**ker – Dirge Of Produce, I-Pod Prophecy with their Mac buddy, Pre-Order Rising with the EB Games guy (pants as a weapon!), DiVX Player May Cry, and Splinter Cell – Augusta Agent 18.

Man this looks promising, doesn’t it?

    "Portland, China?"

    Penny Arcade sucks.  Who cares?

The 360 will be perfect for episodic content, but like a lot of folks I know, we’ll wait and see what the pricing will be and (I) might then just wait for all "episodes" to have been released before jumping in.

Andre, have you heard about Lumines Live being 1200 Microsoft Points and then requiring additional payments of 400 and 300 MPs to be able to play the entire game? IGN reported it (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/727/727998p1.html) and I was wondering how you feel about these sort of tactics of making people pay ~$25 for an arcade game.

Somehow I do not expect this idea to work?
