Playstation 3 Online to Have "Entitlements"

Somehow I’m not surprised.

According to a post over on Evil Avatar, the latest EGM podcast says Sony will have an Achievement clone called “Entitlements” for the Playstation 3. Bit of a strange name in my opinion. I like the term “Achievements” because it describes awards you earn for doing things in the game. “Entitlements” somehow sounds like something you’re, well, entitled to… perhaps even without having to play. <shrug>

Anyway, guess I was right on the prediction, wrong on the name. Time to get cracking on those domain registrations! Big Smile

You have to admit it does fit in the line of stupid names along with Nintendo’s Wii.

this is so blatent. i hope the PS3 fails because of this type of cheap copying and lack of innovention.

i guess imitation is the best form of flattery.

though this business plan they seem so stuck on isn’t going to be able to give them a 5 million unit lead…

    ;)

I hate Sony, they copy great ideas from everybody, yet they act so arrogant.

Well, I’m really happy that they are copying the feature.  It’s a fun feature.

However, the name? It’s like they wanted to be Tycho to the punch or something.

    A few more Sony "innovations":

Playertag: Playertag is your universal name on the Playstation Live Network. Other players just need to know that one name to be able to contact you no matter which game you are playing.

Playercard: The Playercard is a summarization of your profile. Other players can see your "Playerscore", your "Entitlements", your "Standing" and some more bits of information.

4D Everywhere: 4D Everywhere allows you you to use your SonyEricsson mobile phone or your Linux PC to connect to the Playstation Live Network. You can communicate with your friends on your PLN "Playerslist" and even play a few of the Playstation Live Arcade games.

Even if it seems like a copy it is absolutely understable, I mean, if I was Sony and I had to create a network systeam and lacked the experience in it, I would just try to focus on the best available and adapt it to my needs.  They are trying to catch on a terrain they are not winners, can ay of you actually think of a better solution?

  • WhetWurm

Hahaha.  That kinda made me laugh.  They should just call it Playstation360 and get it over with.  Although I do agree, it is a great way to add value to games.  Still, shame on Sony for being so blatent.  Then again, MS is HARDLY exempt from the "copying is the highest form of flattery" label…

  • bowserboy

They could have at LEAST thought up a good name…

  • http://rihannalive.net here

    That name is to wierd.

  • ExTester

You know I kinda knew it was coming, especially with the Youtube video of the PS3 interface. Personally, Entitlements is a bad word and I think it will backfire in some strange and unrelated way. That a side, I think it makes them even more the laughing stock of the game industry seeing how they are claim that everyone is coping them, yet they have done nothing but copy from Microsoft and Nintendo. The only thing original in the PS3 is the Cell chip and blu-ray. And the RSX is not cause its just a 7900 nvidia.

Rather annoyed with Sony, as many people are lately. Now I really hope the system is in third place and that they take huge losses with the console. I remember when I was testing games for them, and they announced how they specifically dropped the price of the PS2 just so Microsoft would have to drop the price of the Xbox so they could not make a profit. Just hope Sony gets punched in the mouth, cause their business practice has been really dirty over the last couple of years.

That all aside, it will mean a couple of positives. It will mean that games will be designed with similar feature sets. Just people wantin to play PS3 will have to pay more since it will be on blu-ray. Which brings me to another point, seems how blu-ray and ps3  are doing nothing but catchup this product cycle and charging way too much for something that you can get cheaper on the xbox360 and hd-dvd. Ah well, I guess I will just watch sony crash and burn.

Yet again, Sony never fails to have a lack of innovation in their system development and copies other companies’ ideas.  Yes, the achievements thing has been working great, but Sony is just being too obvious about all of this.  They are basically copying the whole Live service right off of the bat.

  • itsgreen

I think sony is giving rewards for your achievements…

You are entitled to new gamerpics, backgrounds etc…

    Would be a nice idea.

  • Diabolical

Haha, I find this to be hilarious. Like somebody has already mentioned, Sony has done nothing but copy other people’s innovations and I bet they’ll probably tell the public, "Hey, Look what we came up with!"

At first I was excited for the PS3, but as of late it’ll basically be like owning a 360. Why pay $500/$600 for something I can have on a Xbox 360? And the funny thing is, 360 has done everything Sony is trying to jack, better. And as for the "innovations" to the PS3 controller, well…it isn’t very innovative, now is it?

Entitlements?  Are they marketing the PS3 to gamers or to welfare queens?

  • ExTester

I can just see the sales person being asked questions during the christmas season.

So what the difference between the two..

Well they both are next-gen systems, both offer achievement systems, friends lists, similar games from 3rd party dev., support online play.. but the ps3 is $200 more since it has the new Betamax DVD player which will make the games cost much more than the Xbox360 for the same titles.

The real question is why $200 more for a system that does not have a great online system, or great XBLA titles.

Or the fact that since the games will have to be on blu-ray, will the xbox360 game cost more to make the price equal to the blu-ray title for third party developers? Or will the blu-ray titles be in general more expensive for the same title thats on xbox360. If the titles for PS3 would be say $10 more than the 360 you would have poor sales. If the prices would have to match the 360 title prices, it will make developers lose so much money that they would find themselves in the red for every quarterly earnings report. The PS3 will truely be the next NeoGeo or 3DO, as price is concerned.

  • WiNG

"The real question is why $200 more for a system that does not have a great online system, or great XBLA titles."

Because PS3 still holds very important exclusive games that can be qualified as console-selling… I hate that, but its true.

  • ExTester

WiNG: "Because PS3 still holds very important exclusive games that can be qualified as console-selling… I hate that, but its true."

I know of only two of those games that could be console-selling, and that would be MGS4 and the FinalFantasy ??(I could careless what the number is). Other than that, WWE has been postponed till Holiday 2007. And all the other must have games are coming to X360.

But more importantly, would parents buying the console for their kids tell the difference for $200 between the PS3 and the X360? I think that Sony will not sell all 4 million units by the end of Dec. 31. Call me crazy, but I dont think they can do it. Japan is out of the picture with 16% wanting to buy it, and there is so much negative press about the system price that I think it will do poorly in general.

  • imaginedbug

The PS3 will sell because of all the PS1 and PS2 games that people already own while their original consoles have long died. Add to that the few exclusive titles that sell the PS3 to the series’ fans, and you’ve got a winner.

Luckily Microsoft has gotten Rockstar to launch GTA4 on the 360 alongside the PS3, so that’s one big loss for Sony. GTA4 could’ve sold a lot of PS3s if it’d been a PS3-exclusive.

If you know how many people will buy a PS3, you can bet your bum "Entitlements" (I bet Sony’ll change that name soon due to the comments, just like they changed their boomerang controller) will become a household name within 6 months.

  • David

True you could say they ripped off Microsoft’s Achievements, but it would be ignorant to think Sony would not put out a console in tune with today’s gaming community.  One company always has to get the ball moving with new features and ideas, and it would be suicide for competitors not to follow up with their own versions.

  • Keith

Who didn’t expect this sort of thing to come about.  Many people including myself bought the original xbox over ps2 because of its online capabilities.  If sony was to give the gaming community a console lacking in online features, they would never be able to recover.  Online gaming is more important that single player now a days, and when Microsoft has the best you cannot expect it to not be copied. P.s. 2

Phony sony are just copying the xbox live model and changing the names…do they have a leaked copy of microsofts xbox project plan. :9 I guess they just use FIND AND REPLACE lol.

"We seem to. Every time we go down a path, we look behind and they’re right there – we just can’t shake these guys. I wish that they would come up with some strategies of their own, but they seem to be going down the path of everything we do. If you look at their strategy in other business areas as well, they tend to do that." -Kaz Hirai

    Tehehehe.  Silly Sony.
