Porn, Blu-Ray, and You…

Or not you, as appears to be the case.

Apparently a combination of production costs and Sony not allowing pornography to be released on Blu-Ray media is leading pornography producers to release their high-definition wares solely on HD-DVD. You can find a couple of interesting (and family safe) articles here and here if you want to read more.

What fascinates me about this discussion is the question of whether the availability of pornography is critical to the success of a format. Some argue it was one of the reasons VHS succeeded over Betamax back in the 80s. Whether you approve or not (and I’m not soliciting opinions here), porn is easily available on the web today, and one wonders whether this might mitigate any potential balance-tipping effect this interest might have.

I would argue that it does indeed give an advantage to a format to be supported by the adult industry.  People rent regular movies, but you don’t rent adult movies.

I’m not sure if it matters, back in theday when it was vhs vs betamax the net was’nt around, but now you can get waht ever you want online. I still think it made a differance in the 80s, but now with the net and all its harder(:)to tell

Of course it will matter some, even with the internet you aren’t getting widescreen 1080p large as life movies.

Porn was available on the web before DVD’s hit the market and it didn’t seem to slow their popularity.

  5. ExTester / Jan 16 2007

Ah yes, I can see it all now. Getting the 108" Samsung HDTV and watching 1080p porn on there.. Man those *** will be freaking huge, not to mention other things.

But seriously, I only care for this news since it puts HD-DVD in the positive light in winning the format war. As I personally want blu-ray to fail big time, in hopes that Sony gets the picture and stops creating new lame media formats. Its the most irritating thing of the whole thing, that they have not learned their lesson after I believe 9 failures. Oh well I hope blu-ray will be #10.

"There don’t seem to be any terribly good figures out there, but from what I can see, it looks like DVD sales and rentals for porn are a pittance compared to what they are for mainstream DVDs"

But if that article is about current sales (couldn’t look at the link), then your observation might be somewhat off. It is about when a format starts.

Obviously right now DVD sales are mostly mainstream. But what about when it was where HDDVD/Blu-ray are? Everything starts out small. Perhaps the popularity in the porn industry of the DVD format, won over the mainstream producers. So while the amount of sales was small, it was that last drop needed to see whether it was viable.

The *** industry still does IdeaBILLIONS[/i] of dollars in rentals and sales.  So them choosing one format over the other is still very relevant.

Nothing moves DVD’s as much as porn. :-P I’d say the fate of blu ray is sealed by now :-D

  9. RomeoDude / Jan 16 2007

Well I guess a key component to the success of a format is availability of a broad range of different types of content…..

Really, I still think the winner of the HDDVD Vs BR battle will the regular DVD still

    Woo Hoo!

So then there is a god right? Now I’m crossing my fingers that all my favorite movies don’t happen to be on the Blue Ray studio side.

This war needs to end pretty soon I would say.  I would like to see some numbers on it after Christmas.. They still had Blue Ray players at a RAVAGED best buy that had nothing else a few days before christmas.  Well that and a gameboy micro.. they had one gameboy micro and some Blue Ray players and like a zillon extra 360′s going out the door left and right.

I think Loraan has it right. We’re in a different world now, and the anonymity (or at least, perceived anonymity, heh-heh) of online porn vs. pick-it-up-at-a-store porn gives it the win, whatever the quality level might be.

So, irrelevant for BR vs. HD-DVD.

I once heard a person from Playboy TV interviewed on a morning talk show regarding when PBTV would go high-def.  His response was that 90% of the girls who work in the porn trade, you wouldn’t want to see in high def.  Lower resolution hides a lot of "wear-n-tear" and make-up.
