PS3 Infrared Dongle

One of the complaints I’ve had about the PS3 in the past was the lack of an integrated IR port on the box. Because of this, if you wanted to use your PS3 as Blu-Ray player you had to either buy Sony’s bluetooth remote control accessory, or use your PS3 controller (with a rather complex interface).

Those of us with universal remotes rather hated both of these solutions. We eventually found a little USB dongle Nyko puts out that allows you to control most of the PS3′s movie playback functions via IR. Just wanted to point out that there’s a nice sale going on where you can pick it up for about $10. Enjoy!

Nice…do Sony employees post helpful hints on the 360?

Sony is releasing a TV Tuner accessory next year.  It will be interesting to see if they include/integrate an IR receiver with that.

    Very nice…

I was also disappointed that my Logitech Universal couldn’t control the PS3…this will fix it and look better than the PS2 usb hack thingy that was the only other option.

so does this let you turn your ps3 on and off and navigate the cross media bar so you can start the discs?

It basically duplicates a lot of the old PS2 DVD remote functionality. So it handles moving up/down/left/right, the primary buttons, etc. Unfortunately, it doesn’t handle turning the PS3 on remotely since that was never an option on the PS2.

Think of this as a decent hack, but it’s not a perfect answer to fully enable controlling the PS3 via IR. Sucks, but there you go.

If I can’t use my Harmony remote to control my ps3, then I’m not getting a ps3 :)

u can turn the ps2 both off and ON via it’s remote… infact that was one of the buying factors when i bought a last-gen console (the original xbox couldn’t via it’s remote)
