Saint’s Row Demo Available on Marketplace

The demo is short, and there’s not a whole lot to do.. I mean, in GTA you got several missions to choose from at a time, each leading to new missions which you could start when you wanted. This demo just tells you when to go where and to do what, so aside from driving, stealing some cars, shooting or driving over some innocent bystanders, there’s not much freedom.

I also don’t like that a car gets damaged when you hit the wall that stops you from going to a locked area.

And the car customization features are completely locked… that’s BS. We should’ve gotten at least a few options to get a feel for it.

I did like what I saw and heard though. It’s just not as good a demo as I’d hoped.

The demo is a DEMO!  You can’t criticize a free demo, wait intill the full $60 game comes out and than say how much you didn’t like it

Yeah, like ‘Hitman: Blood Money’ the demo was a bit restrictive, not giving a proper indication of how open and free the final product will be, but I have to say that aside from the needless frame drop in cutscenes, I’m generally happy with how the game is shaping up.

It’s certainly a step up from GTA: San Andreas in terms of graphics, use of physics, area loading times (none going into buildings for example), and hopefully the story and missions will be up to the standard of the GTA games. It definitely looks to be a game worth getting to hold me over until GTA 4 next year…

I hope the story holds it together, because right now it looks like a visually upgraded GTA clone. With severe fps drops.

I’m generally happy with it.  The ‘Missions’ available are VERY linear, but this is clearly the beginning of the game.  Like the others said, it’s kinda the games tutorial, lettin you know how it works.

I’m confident it will become more open and free in the full-retail version.  

I’m also a little dissappointed with the framerate in places.  It seems like so many good 360 games suffer from low framerate issues in various places, even if it’s not a breaking flaw (it didn’t stop me from thoroughly enjoying Tombraider or NFS:MW.)  But still, with industry experts saying the 360 is on par with the PS3, does that mean the PS3 will be plagued with same issues?  Or are these devs just not spending enough time with the hardware?  We’re almost a year in, why do these problems still exist?

Again, it really hasn’t stopped me from thoroughly my 360, but it can be a little disheartening and annoying.

Back to Saints Row.  I did like the no loading going into buildings.  So that’s a plus.

Hey, did anyone notice the melee is a little screwy?  It’s like there’s some sort of auto melee assist (autoaim-ish) thing going on, but its still flawed.  I was trying to beat this fat black lady on the street corner with my night-stick, but when I swung it quickly spun my character in the opposite direction, as if it thought there was a more worthy target behind me to attempt to whack, but noone was there.  Kinda annoying as well.

But hey, has anyone jacked a car with a person still in the front seat?  Get going really fast and then smack  into a wall or the ‘out of bounds’ barrier.  Your car slams to a stop and throws the innocent bystandard through the windshield.  Its actually pretty damn entertaining.

Sadly, the demo provides all the malice and ho-beating I need/can stand.  I was never much for the GTA ‘gangster themed’ sandbox adventurers.  I’m all for free roam ‘sandbox style’ play, im just not much for the gangster stuff.

That’s why I’m looking forward to Crackdown.  Murging the GTA sandbox play with a superhero ‘good’ goodguy character is more appealing to this geek.  You can upgrade your character’s attributes, which gives it a more ‘rpg’ element, which I also like.  And also the entire game is co-op!  That makes it a winner right there.

On that subject, I don’t think any feature in a game can be more valuable than co-op.  While kicking your friends ass in halo is fun, it loses it’s spark quick (to me).  But taking a friend through the game with you with a common purpose instigates team work and comradery.  Something im much more prone to enjoy.  While the halo’s do infact have co-op, it’s not over live.  My friends don’t live with me so I can’t count on having them at my house every time I want to play co-op.  And even then its SPLIT SCREEN!  ARG!  I want my 50" TV all to myself.  Enter XBL Co-op.  Co-op over live will make GOW and Crackdown winners in my book.

The value is incalculable.

I heard it went gold the other day.  I wonder if this means my friend that was one of the developers will crawl out from his cube, or if he’ll need to be surgically removed from his chair.

Sadly, even he says its a good game, but not one that will justify buying a 360 on its own.  So I’m still waiting on buying a 360

After reading some of the replies and comments on the major nelson site, and comparing the type of surfer on his blog and on this one, im glad i found this blog first. It has to be said.
