The Outlier Post: Microsoft Labs Photosynth Technology
Just saw a blog posting from Bryan Ressler, one of the Microsoft Labs PIX team members. In it he gives some details about the Photosynth technology preview the PIX team has been working on. Apparently, this technology takes a collection of photos from a location, analyzes them, and builds up a 3D space from that data you can explore. It’s hard to describe, but pictures and videos can be found on the blog post above.
I thought this quote was particularly interesting:
“What if all the world’s billions of images were woven into a single gigantic Photosynth collection? What if you could visit any place, anywhere, through the eyes of the countless people who have photographed that place in the past? What if you could take a trip through time, seeing how a place changed as time went by?”
Very, very cool!
All that said, here’s a question for you guys. I completely recognize this is more of a “cool technology” post, and doesn’t have much to do with video games or the video game industry. (I could probably come up with some interesting game concepts down the road, but it’s a stretch.) Are you interested in this sort of occasional non-game-related “it’s just cool!” technology post? Or should I just stick to the game industry and (at least tangentially) related topics like HD-DVD, home theater, etc?
Thoughts?

I’m all for the "cool technology" posts.
I like comments that are not exactly game related.
people who like games, often like other topics like this too.
cool stuff, that PIX team is doing. would like to get my hands on that.
The "cool technology" posts are great. Keep ‘em comin’!
I’m not one to argue with cool tech posts, that’s for sure.
I really enjoy your insight on all things tech. I see you has a fantastic source for gaming and home entertainment news. I also see your connection to MS gives you access to information that the everyday geek would not normally come across. In short, I think if you come across new "cool" information even if it is not gaming related go for it. It just might set you apart from the rest of the pack.
Keep ‘em coming!
As long as its at least related to electronics or fiction or hobbies I think its cool.
It’s all good. Especially, when it is XNA related item.
I’m all for the "cool tech" posts!
I love the random tech news. Keep it comming!
the technology looks really sweet!
When can we play with it?!?!
Yeah this looks great.
could they maybe squeeze in making it so my usb drive does not grab the same drive letter as a mapped drive every time i plug it in?
I checked the videos and was very unimpressed with the "weaving" and "3D" of the pictures. What I did like is the idea of taking a picture and having the software find similar pictures of the same subject so you can find details or larger images of the same subject (a building).
Searching by image reference instead of keywords would be cool, but I can imagine it will take a lot of work to get it to work and sift through all the snapshots people have taken and put online.
If this kind of program ever does see the light of day and works, it will have to offer limiting the search to certain locations, like stock photo sites so it excludes all the pointless, low quality snapshots found on sites like flickr.
Yeah, I love eeing new, unique techs! I am definetly for seeing any "cool Techs" posts.
Thanks for the comments guys – I’ll keep on posting interesting cool tech stuff as I find it, then.
Technology is something of the future so ideas can be interweaven into videogames.
I recently started reading your blog and so far i have found it very interesting. I found it when Major Nelson linked to you one day.
Personally I think you should post anything you want to, it is your blog after all! Its nice to read about a variety of topics from the same area, ie, technology.
The more posts the better though, it keeps me from actually doing some work
cool tech., is great. keep it coming.
I love anything tech-related…..by all means, keep up the good work!
Ironically, I USED TO get all my tech news from ‘TECH TV’; but, ever since they sold out to ‘G4′…….well, let’s just say ‘G4TV’ thinks 12 hours/day of ‘Star Trek’ is "cool".
