True or False: Is Sony arrogant?

Phil Harrison (from an interview with Joystiq): “I don’t think we’re arrogant.”

Kaz Hirai (from an interview with CNN): “The next generation doesn’t start until we say it does.”

Seems to me as though the latter quote is quickly becoming Sony’s own “mission accomplished” albatross. Anyway… survey says?

I would say that Sony has, in the very least, made themselves appear to be extremely arrogant.

Kaz Hirai’s comment about the next generation not starting until they say it does is only one example of their arrogance.

Another Sony exec. (I can’t recall who exactly) even had the gaul to say the "Microsoft copies Sony". Excuse me!? Where did Sony get the idea for analog control? Nintendo. How about their new motion sensing controller? Again, Nintendo. Now, how about their "new" online network for the PS3. If you look at the features they’ve promised for it I’d have to say it’s a direct ripoff of Microsoft’s Xbox Live.

If anyone is "copying" anyone it’s Sony copying everyone else.

Ok, enough of my ranting about this. That’s my 10 cents worth. Take care.

What Sony has goes beyond arrogance straight to hubris.

Remember before the PS1 was released, when everyone said "Sony doesn’t know games" and "they’re just a consumer electronics company and don’t get software" and thought Sega and Nintendo would steamroll them?

It’s ironic to me that they think nobody else can come into a market THEY dominate and oust them.

So we have stuff like the PSP (which still runs at a slower clock than they advertise) getting killed by the DS, and all the disappointment with the PS3.

Sony’s attitude seems to be "we’ll win because we’re Sony." It’s the attitude that got the entire portable audio market swiped out from under their noses by Apple. It’s the reason their TVs aren’t selling nearly as well as they used to, through the HDTV transition.

The question is – if Microsoft is successful, will they do the same? Will the 3rd Xbox, or the portable gaming system, really push the envelope and innovate, or will Microsoft "pull a Sony" once they get on top?

You can’t ever let your own success get to your head in this business. There are plenty of competitors with big pockets willing to spend what it takes and work as hard as need be to push forward the next great idea and snag away your marketshare.

Whether or not they’re truely arrogant is largely dependent on how much of the garbage they keep shoveling us they actually believe. Based simply on how they talk at (not to) us, Sony is incredibly arrogant. Reading the JoyStiq interview, I’m surprised how resentful the executive seems in the face of non-fluff questions. It’s true that market leaders do face more criticism, but there’s a distinct sense of entitlement which is grating.

I remember one instance in which a Sony exec dismissed Microsoft’s inroads as a mere "lucky hit against a martial arts master" (or something to that effect). These kinds of comments make it so hard to take the company seriously–which is sad in light of the fact that the PS3 is otherwise a strong contender.

Sony’s not the only one spewing hyperbole, but they’re certainly the worst.

This survey doesn’t start until sony says so.

  • brasilcaps

That’s the one of things that really turned me off about Sony. That, plus their lies (Specs, CG, rumble), their love of shoving us with a new media that they created (UMD, Blu-ray), and their lack of new ideas and innovation (no, a tilting a controller is hardly an innovation)

  • Blackfish95

    Yes.

Not just in the gaming space, but in all they do. You will pay a higher price for anything with a Sony logo on it, even if it’s the exact same spec as something else. Many of their CE devices are made in Korea or China by companies like LG.

Korean CE companies are taking over, next it’ll be the Chinese. Japanese companies need to win back the respect they used to deserve.

  • Ozymandias

Kudos to HcC and his "This survey doesn’t start until sony says so" comment. Don’t know why, but that struck me as particularly funny this groggy morning. :)

Let’s flip this discussion on its head for a second. What has Sony promised around the PS3 that has proven true?

  • HcC

    Glad you enjoyed that :)

I can’t help but laugh watching this. When Ken Kutaragi gets cheered for the 7 wireless controllers over bluetooth and then he puts his hand in the air to cheer himself on. The way he’s pitching everything he just seems like a swaggering lounge singer who knows he’s full of b.s.

    2 HDMI outputs

    Built-in Gigabit ethernet ports

    Standard Wi-Fi

Bluetooth for up to 7 wireless controllers

Sony is arrogant. It takes arrogance to think that just due to their name, they can and will win in all engagements. Think Denny Crane, think Mohammed Ali, they all use their past to drive their present forward, much like standing on the shoulders of giants. Microsoft made it’s own giant.

  • ThinkSteveZ

    Guilty as charged.

Uhhh. That they have one..uh, somewhere?

No, seriously. I would have to say that the one thing I can think of they did promise and look like they’ll be good for is backwards compatability. Even if they take the crude ‘PS2′ approach oh simply putting the ‘actual hardware’ into the PS3, it looks like they will achieve it as they hope to. (even if it means at a higher cost to the customer).

On the other hand, while it doesn’t effect my overall love for the machine, I do think Microsoft didn’t Ideaquite[/i] live up to my hopes for backwards compatability on the 360. I will say that they did deliver what they said they would… but I hoped for a bit more. One, I’ve always wanted to play Psychonauts. Everyone says its a great game, and I thought, ‘Why not play this great game on my great new console, with a totally awesome wireless controller and a large 50" display upscaled to 720p?’ Ohh wait, I can’t.

I also am disappointed with the Halo2 emulation. My buddy and me have been following the Halo 3 news and got to discussing the Halo2 story. When we deceided we couldn’t remember all of it, we wanted to get a refresher. So we popped out copy of Halo2 into my trusty 360 and started a Co-op game. About half way through we say a wierd artifact on the screen, first only on my half of the screen. It was like shadow or shading got ‘stuck’ on the screen. It covered most my view and I couldn’t see. At the next load it would either go away, or reform a bit. It became quite frustrating.

Unfortunately, I know microsoft/bungie’s main focus is on Multiplayer emulation… so I’m sure they have no desire to fix my lowly single player issues.

Anyways, got to run. Didn’t mean to turn this into a ‘whats still wrong with the 360 discussion’… but thats kinda where my mind drifted.

-More on topic words after the break.

  • Teph

    Anyways… yeah sorry.

Anyways, other than the backwards compatability I’d say I’m happier with what Microsoft has brought to the the table than what Sony seems will be bringing to the market.

But I do realize that this might just be because of the types of games I like to play, but thats just how it goes I guess.

Anyways, I guess I can’t think of anything else on topic so I guess i’ll see you all in another thread.

  • http://rocknfrost@rainierconnect.com sony sucks

When i first found out that they were making the next gen consoles, i thought that sony would become the master of that, but i was wrong.

The Cell wont sell and is goin to hell

The Blu-Ray is Gay lets sing hooray

    Sony online is so behind

and their lies are like goin to die, goodbye

  • http://mailto://whyklef@hotmail.com WhyKlef

I have been into video games for more then 15 years. I am an avid gamer and will for sure end up buying a PS3 but first a Nintendo Wii. I have all past gen consoles, handhelds and for sure a Xbox 360.

Playstation is IMO a brand that is tarnished by the name that goes past it (Sony) and the philosophy that this company brings to it’s gaming division. We can easily point all the lies Sony brought us with PS3 yet they’re is so many that we have forgotten with time. Remember PSP? Next to it was a stylus and Sony would be promess in the near future we would see a stylus that would turn your screen into touch capabilities. I have yet to see that 7000 unique playable PS1 games for PSP when PS1 library counts around 2000-3000 different games according to IGNs PS1 library.

Yet, arrogance can bring you somewhere, when Sony though Project PSX would be too good for Nintendo but should rather stay for themselves under a new Sony division called Playstation, it did brought them somewhere! Sony nowadays is such a bad company to rely on that when it comes to electronics (TV, Audio, DVD and such…) Playstation brand is their main income. People have lost faith in Sony and it shows and so have i but i am first and foremost a gamer so i will get Sony products also.

Yet, my opinion stays and has been for quite a while, Sony with his own standards (UMD, MS, Blu-Ray) and his bad quality product for an expensive price leaves me in disgust. For anyone that has to choose, go for a X360 and a Wii! You want graphic power, go for a high-end PC!

  • Lefty2k3

Lol, it’s the question no one needs to ask, we all know it’s true.

It’s rather disgusting actually. From a consumer side at least. A smart consumer doesn’t buy a product when someone says "We’re better…because I say so!" A smart consumer then decides that a good bit of reasearch is in order.

I think M$ would win in some non-biased researching right now. Later things may change.

My biggest concern for the industry as a whole is what happens if Sony’s expensive, underpowered machine with more expensive games (unless Blu-Ray disc costs drop) and (probably) not as strong of an online service (and really cocky business people) actually WINS?

That should be the concern right now. It would send some very bad messages into the industry.

  • gwolf

I very much doubt that Sony will for much longer dominate the game industry. The only thing they have working for them is the number of 3rd party developers that worked on the PS2.

Given Microsoft’s strong showing with the 360 and Nintendo’s resurgence in the industry; Sony will have to compete for developer support just like everyone else.

Sony can’t live on fanboy loyalty alone. Well they can live on it , but they will lose a lot of weight.
