U.S. Video Game Console Online Shopping Demand

Saw an update from Compete (a company that tracks and analyzes online store searches to understand consumer demand). This time they’re focusing on the Elite SKU, and asking the question of whether there’s market demand for it. The whole article is interesting, so head over and take a read. But I’ll pull a couple of interesting charts.

The first shows that Wii continues to be most sought after console, though its launch numbers have come down (as would be expected). It also shows that PS3 demand is declining month to month (also confirmed by the latest NPD numbers). Makes it all the more likely we’ll be seeing a price cut this year. In general, all the platforms (including the 360) are holding relatively steady as we’d expect for spring months.

What’s more interesting to me is a chart showing online retail demand for the Elite system as compared to different 360 SKUs/bundles. Remember, the Elite isn’t even out yet, so this shows pre-order demand only – we’ll need to see how that translates into real sales once available.

Most interesting to me is that it appears the Elite may be driving incremental shoppers to 360. To quote:

Interestingly, the Elite launch has driven incremental shoppers to the 360 brand. Looking at the aggregated** total shoppers, there has apparently been very little overlap elite shoppers and bundle or “lesser system” shoppers.
** Aggregated 360 demand measures the total number of shoppers for a 360, regardless of overlap: If someone shopped both a 360 Elite and a Bundle, they would only be counted once.

Although we’ll have to see how many Elite purchasers are upgraders vs. people who have been waiting on the sidelines, the idea that the total market might be expanding is exciting. That’s good for everyone, whatever platform you might care to hang your hat on!

I think the Elite will be pretty successful.  I guess I could be considered an upgrader, because my 360 broke, and my warranty at best buy says I can get a gift card for the value of my 360, so I’m going to just pay the extra $80 and upgrade to an Elite when it comes out.  Since I don’t have an HD TV, the HDMI doesn’t really appeal to me, but I like the idea of having a 120 gig hard drive.

So what is the word on Microsoft’s solution for those of us that are upgrading from our Pros to an Elite? I am speaking of transfering data and the DRM issue.

You spelled pwned wrong ;)  I’m no fanboy, but there is a certain satisfaction in seeing Sony take it in the shorts after their elitist (pun intended) pricing.

In my experience with the Wii, it doesn’t surprise me sales are declining.  While I understand the initial "wow" factor, I just didn’t see the appeal in the system, as a whole.

Having been a PS1 and PS2 fan (I missed the Xbox), I am absolutely digging my Xbox 360.

As a whole, yes … this is good news for the industry.  I am looking forward to more quality titles.

MS should now focus on making the box smaller, quieter, more reliable, and more resistent to disc scratching.  It also wouldn’t hurt if the remote worked properly, as in I don’t have to move around on my couch to get the IR to work.  Finally, the last piece of the puzzle is more integration with their other technologies.  Im waiting for this connected entertainment vision to pan out.  I hope MS doesn’t dissappoint.

As I’m picking up an Elite myself (to match the employee HD-DVD drive), I’ve been asking around myself. I don’t have details (beyond a cable being available to enable the scenario), but I’m not concerned about there not being a solution. In other words, don’t worry. I’m not. :)

  • that won’t stay like that for years. we need to see what will happen when more exclusives games come out. i can’t see anything other than halo that is driving sales atm. inevitable Gears 2 will be good one i reckon.

Is there any official word on when the 65 nanometer xbox360 is coming out? Is it on the Elite?
